Our first FAQ, covering the fundamentals, has now been published. The following is an extract:
1) What is COBIT™ ?
COBIT ™ is short for 'Control Objectives for Information and related Technology'. It is essentially an open and freely available standard for good Information Technology security and control practices.
2) Who publishes it?
It was created by the IT Governance Institute and is now in its third edition.
3) What does it comprise?
It includes over three hundred specific 'control objectives' and includes a framework and audit guides for over 30 information technology processes. Overall, COBIT ™ is organized into six components, as follows:
- Executive Summary
- Management Guidelines
- Framework
- Control Objectives
- Implemenation Toolset
- Audit Guidelines
4) Is it a new standard?
No. It was originally produced in the early nineties, but has been revised several times since then, as it's user base has expanded.
5) Are the so called 'measurement tools' included?
COBIT™ includes a range of support items and tools. These include: performance measurement items, a list of critical success factors (CSF's) and maturity models for benchmarking and comparison.
6) How often is COBIT ™ Updated?
New upgrades are published approximately every three years
7) What is the current version?
The most recently published is Version 4.
